Start with verification
Create a Bing Webmaster Tools property and verify it β either by importing your existing Google Search Console property, adding the XML file to your web root, or dropping a meta tag in the head. Verification takes five minutes and unlocks the crawl diagnostics that make everything else possible.
The checklist
- Submit an XML sitemap at
/sitemap.xmlcontaining only canonical, indexable URLs. Remove tag archives, paginated duplicates and thin pages. - Review robots.txt. One stray
Disallow: /from a staging environment blocks the entire site. Check it after every launch. - Self-referencing canonicals on every page. Conflicting canonicals are the most common reason a page silently disappears from the index.
- Unique titles and descriptions. Under 60 and 160 characters respectively, written for a human, describing what the page actually offers.
- One H1 per page and a logical heading order beneath it.
- Structured data β Organization or LocalBusiness sitewide, plus Article, Product, FAQPage or BreadcrumbList where relevant. Validate it before you ship it.
- Internal links. Every important page should be reachable within three clicks of the homepage, with descriptive anchor text.
- HTTPS everywhere with a single canonical hostname and 301 redirects from all other variants.
- Fast, stable pages. Crawlers budget time per site; slow responses mean fewer pages crawled per visit.
- Monitor the crawl report monthly and fix 404s, redirect chains and blocked resources as they appear.
How long does it take?
For a small site with clean technical signals, expect initial indexing within a few days of submission and a stable picture inside four to six weeks. Older sites with legacy redirects and duplicate content take longer, because the crawler first has to unlearn what it already believes about your URLs.
